What is tapping instrument?

A tapping instrument, also known as the tap guitar, is a stringed musical instrument that allows the player to create percussive sounds while playing intricate melody lines with both hands. It was popularized by musicians like Stanley Jordan, Michael Hedges, and Andy McKee.

The instrument typically has six or seven strings and a fretboard that extends beyond the body of the guitar. The player taps the strings with their fingers in a rhythmic pattern, similar to playing a drum kit. This results in a unique sound that combines elements of guitar, percussion, and melody.

Tapping instruments are often played in an alternate tuning, which allows for more complex chord voicings and creates a fuller sound. They have gained popularity in recent years due to their versatility and unique sound, with many contemporary musicians incorporating them into their performances and recordings.
